Why is Garret Mountain special?

Garret Mountain Reservation is designated as a “National Natural Landmark” by the National Park Service (NPS) — one of only 602 such federally designated sites in the United States.
This designation was given to Garret because of its geological features -its cliffs are an excellent example of jointed basaltic lava flow. While Garret received the NNL designation because of its unique geology, it has a great deal of ecological importance as well.
